Looks like a killer fly, Scott.

Great idea, Byron. My technique- not original- is to tie in one clump, but then separate about 1/3, wrap thread through the "split", then do it again with the next 1/3. Finish off with a few tight...
Nice as always, Scott. I've been a clacka caddis fan for several years now. They're a killer for me during the Yellow Sally hatch. But I want to try the opal, too. Dennis Potter swears by it.

I've fished that with excellent success. I tie one on a #16 hook, with a yellow body, for the little yellow stonefly hatch. The trout seem to love it.

If you're tying size 16's, the deer hair wing is likely too close to the tips to be very hollow. To be safe, I'd apply floatant to the wing, along with the body. Great pattern, BTW.

Nice variation, Scott. But the original Skunk worked as either a "semi"floating, or sunk fly. Years back I caught some nice 'bows on the Yellowstone on a wet skunk. good fly, either way.

True, oldster. Frank Johnson thought it would match the "footprint" of a mayfly better then traditional wound hackles. It does take a little practice to get it right- like Byron did.

Years ago I was amazed to see numerous browns leaping clear out of the Wolf River (Wisconsin) for hovering damsel flies. Try to match that kind of "hatch", boys and girls!

Hi, Whitewolf. Check out the Nikon Elph series on eBay. Lots of very compact cameras with good features. And many properly priced under $100.

This book is a requirement for any trout fly tyer. A true classic.

Vince Marinaro wrote about a similar hopper fly in "A Modern Dry Fly Code".

Nice SBS as always. I like Kelly's videos, but I don't need to watch 24 minutes after this post.

I use stimulators for my fall back flies. My biggest AuSable brown caught on a dry took a size 12 stimulator on the Mason Tract. I've ties a couple Borchers but, for some reason, haven't given them a...
'chaser- I assume you're setting the camera to Macro, right?

What a great loss. Godspeed, Deanna. A truly sad day for FAOL, and the entire flyfishing community.
Chuck
Beauty and grace. How appropriate. Thanks, Byron.
Chuck
Thanks, Byron. Love those comparaduns!
Chuck
Get well soon, Deanna. So sorry that you can't cast any more- but you'll always be "Ladyfisher" to us on FAOL!
Chuck
It's an excwllent fly, Byron. I've had success fishing it during yellow Sally emergences.

I think flies tied on up-eye hooks look pretty sexy! But hooking fish proved to be a problem. It improveved when I used any knot where the tippet exited through the front of the eye unlike, say, a...
Turkey flats are the bee's knees, oldster! Give them a try. (Bee's knees? Really?).
Chuck
Beautiful tie (as always!).
Chuck
Neatly done. But Mr. Young did like a more raggedy look- felt that it more closely mimicked a caddis case.
Chuck
Sorry about your loss, Lotech. But you wrote a lovely letter.
